A monitor is the component you look at for every second of every session, it outlives two or three graphics cards, and it is routinely the most under-researched purchase in a gaming setup. Understanding four specifications is enough to make a confident choice and to ignore the marketing built around everything else.
Refresh rate: the upgrade you actually feel
Refresh rate, measured in hertz, is how many times per second the display can update. Moving from a 60Hz panel to 144Hz is the most immediately noticeable upgrade in PC gaming โ motion becomes clearer, aiming feels more connected, and even moving the mouse on the desktop looks different.
The returns diminish beyond that point. The gap between 60Hz and 144Hz is enormous; between 144Hz and 240Hz it is real but subtle, and relevant mainly to competitive players. For most people, a high-quality 144Hz or 165Hz panel is a better purchase than a lower-quality 240Hz one at the same price.
One caveat that catches people out: your PC must actually produce the frames to benefit. A 240Hz monitor fed 60 frames per second displays 60 frames per second. Match the monitor to what your hardware can realistically render in the games you play.
Resolution: balancing sharpness against frame rate
1080p remains the sensible default for budget and mid-range systems, particularly at 24 inches where pixel density is perfectly adequate and the GPU load is manageable at high refresh rates. 1440p is the current sweet spot for mid-to-high-end systems โ a genuine visual upgrade at 27 inches without the punishing GPU cost of 4K. 4K is spectacular and demanding in equal measure, and generally makes sense only alongside a high-end graphics card.
Screen size and resolution interact, which is why a resolution recommendation without a size attached is meaningless. 1080p looks sharp at 24 inches and noticeably soft at 32; 1440p at 27 inches is close to ideal. Buying a large screen at a low resolution is the most common regret in this category.
Panel types in plain language
- IPS โ the best colour reproduction and viewing angles, now with response times fast enough for competitive play. The default recommendation for most buyers.
- VA โ deeper blacks and higher contrast than IPS, which suits dark, atmospheric games, but with slower pixel response that can produce smearing in fast motion.
- TN โ the fastest and cheapest, with visibly worse colour and viewing angles. Increasingly hard to justify unless budget is the overriding constraint.
- OLED โ perfect blacks, exceptional contrast, and near-instant response. Genuinely stunning for gaming, at a premium price and with burn-in as a consideration for static interface elements over years of use.
Adaptive sync: the feature worth insisting on
Variable refresh rate technology synchronises the monitor’s refresh to your GPU’s frame output, eliminating screen tearing without the input lag that traditional V-Sync introduces. It also smooths the experience when frame rates fluctuate, which they always do.
Both major GPU vendors’ implementations are now broadly cross-compatible with most modern monitors, so this is less of a lock-in decision than it once was. What matters is confirming the monitor supports adaptive sync at all, and checking its supported range โ a panel that only syncs between 48Hz and 144Hz behaves differently below that floor than one with a wider range.
The specifications that matter less than the marketing suggests
Advertised response time figures are measured under favourable conditions that rarely reflect real use, and the difference between “1ms” and “4ms” on two IPS panels is generally not perceptible. Contrast ratio claims for anything other than OLED tend to be optimistic. And HDR support on affordable monitors is frequently nominal โ a panel can accept an HDR signal without having the brightness or local dimming to display it meaningfully, so treat entry-level HDR badges as decoration rather than a feature.
Independent review measurements are far more reliable than specification sheets for all of these. Reading two reviews of a monitor you are considering is thirty minutes that reliably prevents an expensive disappointment.
